Sweltering in the heat and humidity of Washington, one cannot help but envy Dunham Kirkham and his wife, Elsie, who luxuriate on their cool Maine island ten miles off Rockland in Penobscot Bay. After a full and very active life, he told us the other day, they live quietly, read their books, listen to music, and, for further satisfaction, look out over a prospect encompassing spruce-covered islands and the broad, blue, ever-changing Atlantic Ocean. Farmer covered the waterfront in the war with medical service in Australia, the Philippines, Japan, and Korea. He then worked in government medicine with the V.A. for the intervening years until his retirement in 1972, serving for ten years as chief of medicine at the Maine V.A. hospital. Both Elsie, a native of the area, and Farmer are in good health and, with their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchild living next door, seem definitely to have found the good life. Farmer, incidentally, made sure we knew that he had contributed to the Alumni Fund.
Don Lincoln has had a very rough 1990 and is not out of the woods yet. We talked briefly with him on June 1 when he had just returned from the hospital after a stay from early April for the treatment of a recurring bleeding ulcer. He had then had two operations. A check with Peg on July 9 reveals that Don's improvement is coming slowly and there is hope for a complete healing of the disrupting condition very shortly.
The old outdoorsman, Dick Gerstell, after retiring at 65, has continued his interest in natural phenomena and the outdoors and is devoting his time to studying and implementing ways to reestablish the traditional shad run in the Susquehanna River. The old power company clams disrupted the spawning routine ana Dick, with typical courtesy, wants to help the amorous Alosa get over the obstacles and up to their mating grounds. No more slumgullion chubber fare for Dick. He and Vivian have moved into a retirement village in Lancaster where their meals are served and there is no lawn to mow or sidewalk to keep clear.
