Bittersweet is the best description for our class news. The "sweet" news is that '37 classmates and friends contributed $ 115,000 to the 1990 Alumni Fund, surpassing the class goal of $110,000 with 77 percent participation. The "bitter" news is that Head Agent Dana Prescott died of a heart attack on July 3. Dana and his class agents planned and executed a mighty effort to meet our goal and exceeded it by $5,000. President Fran Fenn said of Dana, "No member of the '37 family did more for our class and for Dartmouth. He was an inspiration to all of us."
While visiting the Dartmouth admissions office on Class Officers Weekend to put in a good word for an aspiring candidate, your secretary was attracted to a beautiful plaque which read as follows:
"In Appreciation of Donald C. McKinlay '37, Founder of Dartmouth's Enrollment Program or, as he said, 'Field Hand' for Directors Al Dickerson '30 and Eddie Chamberlain '36, Servant and Benefactor of the College as Alumnus, Alumni Councillor, and Trustee 1974-84. His heart has always been in Admissions 'Because there is where it all begins.' "
Class trips chairman Ben Doran reports the following classmates will be cruising the Seine: Bib and Katie Bankart, Roily and Sherry Bialla, Jane Brown, Ben and Barbara Cardozo, Steve and Dorothy Cochrane, Frank and Twila Danzig, Ben and Marge Doran, Dana and Barb Douglass, Lanse and Flo Moore, Sey and Bobbie Ochsner, Pat Olson, Hank and Barb Pierce, Ruth Ray, and Connie Sayre. We learned of the death of Bill Bell, who suffered a heart attack on March 10. Bill, a retired colonel, resided at Ft. Belvoire, Va. John Detlefsen called with the sad news that Jim Luttrell's wife, Jean, died on May 30 in a Puerto Rico hospital after a long illness.
Mini-reunion co-chairmen Charles Blaisdell and John Johannessen have a great program arranged for September 14-15. As you read this, you may still have time to pack the duffel bag and golf clubs and head for Hanover. Bob Bosworth, who started our mini-reunions a few years ago, and Martha will be living at Eastman from mid-August to mid-October.
Russ Stearns and his 55th Reunion committee members are meeting regularly, planning for our reunion in 1992.
Many, many of our classmates are celebrating their 75th birthdays this year. There are too many to mention all the names, so a happy birthday to all who have persevered life after Dartmouth to reach the diamond anniversary.
