Semper Fi: Who says you can't go home again? The promise of a grand adventure drew the class of '80 together last June 15-17. Classmates, family, and friends answered the bell in record-breaking fashion. We set the following standards: most alumni at a tenth reunion (404), most people at a tenth reunion (786), and most alumni at any Dartmouth reunion! Even Noah didn't get that kind of turnout when he was filling the ark.
Hats off to Parker and Katie Small, Sue Fagerstrom, and the rest of the reunion committee who put together such a great weekend. There, was indeed something for everyone. From impromptu sunrise golf tourneys to afternoon swims to midnight revelry, the fan never set on the '80 empire. It was a perfect "10."
Vein Quigley, who has been delivering kegs in the upper valley for 33 years, was really impressed with our unquenchable thirst. "I haven't seen anything like it since Jerry Jeff Walker left town," ne explained. "These people were clearly professionals." Professionals indeed. The class of '80 had the only tent with its own loading dock.
We all have special memories of the weekend. Here are some of ours.
Friday, June 15, 10:00 a.m. Hanover Country Club. Fifteen foursomes tee off in the '80 golf classic. Ed Laux fires a 78 and takes the title.
Saturday, June 16, 5:47 a.m. Hanover. Seventy percent of the '80s are sleeping. One hundred percent of those who did not bring children are sleeping.
8:00 a.m. The Hop. Politics makes strange breakfast fellows. The class of '80 meets, officially. Outgoing president Denise Dupre announces the new class officers. Cathy McGrath is elected president. Charlie Clement retains his post as treasurer. The only close race if for secretary. We prevail, as the write-ins from Cook County, Ill., prove decisive.
8:15 a.m. The Class Tent. Winston Hutchins refuses to concede the secretarial race. He convenes a press conference next to the donut line where he announces that he will file a law suit to void the election. He claims that none of the 50 votes he cast were counted.
10:30 a.m. Sachem Field. As the backs go limping by. A pack of retired and semi-retired ruggers, among them Dr. Drew Miller, Dr. Rick Zogby, Webb Vorys, Esq., and Bob Brown, A.B., M.B.A., take on the Hanover Old Boys. Averaging 55 years of age, the Old Boys tire in the second half, and our team prevails. There are no serious injuries.
1:00 p.m. Storrs Pond. Kodak remembers. Parker Small snaps his 2,345th color slide of the weekend. 3:00 p.m. One-Hour Photo. Main Street. Parker waits impatiently for his slides.
5:30 p.m. The Green. Michael Chu strolls across the campus singing an aria from the final act of Carmen. Michael, who sings opera in Los Angeles, explains, "I still train the same old way. Practice ... practice ...practice."
9:15 p.m. Spaulding Auditorium. We're in the money ... almost. Mark Alperin and Meg Coughlin LePage announce that '80 has raised $185,800.80, breaking all records. Only Mark knows that the class is actually 67 cents short.
9:30 p.m. Keynote speaker and 1980 Professor of the Year and honorary class member Ron Green begins his speech.
10:40 p.m. Professor Green nears the end of his speech. Bob Brown sleeps soundly. Browner, who escaped injury on the rugby field, is jolted awake and smashes his forehead against the seat in front of him.
11:00 p.m. The class winds out of Spaulding. Mark Alperin stays behind, searching amidst the seats for loose change. When he finally leaves, he is still 25 cents short.
Sunday, June 23. 3:30 a.m. Phi Delta. Winston Hutchins finally concedes. He graciously pledges his campaign treasury to the Alumni Fund. The 25 cents pledge pushes the class over the top.
5:30 a.m. Hanover Country Club. The last four golfers entered in the '80 Classic take the first tee. Andy Watson knocks his divot 40 yards, his ball travels 20. John Cholnoky hooks left. Drew Dougherty hits it a ton. The final member of the foursome is Dr. Joe Misiewicz. Joe is cited for a dress-code violation and is not permitted to tee off. Hawaiian shirts are not allowed on the golf course.
