With the outset of a new year for the Dartmouth Alumni Fund drive, it will be good to focus on our leader in this effort for the coming three years. We had a sudden change, due to shifting conditions, and class president Alan Epstein carried the job. Being a multi year veteran as class agent, Alan knew just what to doand did it right, without hesitation. Our showing was well over 100 percent of the dollar goal, and a bit lower than hoped on total participation. Thanks and a "good job" to Alan; and a further pat on the back for having brought the class a new leader for the coming drive.
He is Henry "Hank" Brezinski, rec ently retired teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools in Berne, N.Y. Hank is a modest, unassuming overachiever. His name hasn't appeared in headlines, but his work has been praised by his peers and those who know or work with him.
I recall Hank as a freshman, in 1943, right at home since he grew up in Lebanon and was a three-sport athlete. Hank was one of the few '47 freshmen who stayed with the football team that fall with Cotton Johnson, Hal Clayton, Jack Young, Joe Scandore, and Don Evans.
After service in the Army Air Force Hank returned to graduate in 1949. He earned a master's in education at UVM and then studied at Albany State, Cornell, and Dartmouth. He was married, 41 years ago, to Maxine, and they had two sons, Bruce '70, and Stephen (Plattsburg State '73.) Tragically, Maxine died in September. A lovely person; she will be missed at our reunions.
Hank's long teaching career began in Lebanon, N.H., and then Arlington, Vt., where he coached boys basketball. Then to Salem, N.Y., and Washington Academy, as a social studies teacher, 1951.
Hank's last move was to Berne, N.Y., where he was supervising principal at Berne-Knox High School, finally assuming the highest position, superintendent of schools. When Hank retired in 1983, he was honored by the entire community for his service.
Hank brings all his skills and powers to the class now as head agent for the next three years. He will be assisted by AndyMcCulloch, who lives with Joan sometimes in her old family home in Brattleboro and at regular intervals in Greenwich, Conn. Andy was a financial analysis advisor for many years with IBM White Plains, N.Y. This prepared him for his eventual career which started with retirement in 1985 from IBM. Andy now has fun as a financial consultant, preparing speeches and seminars. One client is Columbia University, where he is "Administrative Director of the Institute for Qualitative Research and Finance." Andy must see a lot of Norman Fink, who is deputy VP for Development and Alumni Relations. Norm is their leading fund-drive organizer, renowned in his field. With Norm and Andy, Columbia is in good hands, and it may not be long before they win a football game.
And our class is in fine hands with Hank and Andy organizing our fundraising.
