A very timely announcement from the North Country: all classmates are invited to a big round of class activities in conjunction with Dartmouth Night and Homecoming Weekend Dartmouth vs. Cornell—October 25-26. Friday evening there will be a cocktail reception in the Drake Room of the Hanover Inn at 5:00. There will be hors d'oeuvres galore, obviating the need for dinner. After the parade, speeches, and bonfire, there will be a cash bar reception in room 101 at the Inn.
The class will hold a meeting in Thayer Hall on Saturday morning and tables will be reserved for lunch in Leverone Field House before the game. Immediately following the game the class will gather in the Faculty Lounge overlooking the Green to toast the victory over Cornell.
Carol and Steve Mullins will again host Saturday night cocktails, a buffet dinner, and square dancing at their farmhouse in Norwich, Vt. The cost will be only $25 per person, which John Gillespie claims is a very good deal for a Saturday night dinner in the Upper Valley.
Herb Hillman sent me an article from the Stowe Reporter: Jim Stead, of Burlington and Stowe, has accepted a position with the Peace Corps in the Republic of Vanuatu. Jim will be the small business advisor to the Development Bank of Vanuatu, formulating a micro-loan program and assisting in its administration.
'"I hope this will be a continuation of what I've done in my business life,' said Mr. Stead. As former owner of various Vermont small businesses, including Land-Air Honda/Suzuki and Aluminum Cap Seal, a wine sealing product, he is looking forward to the change and the challenge. He also confesses to looking forward to the tropics.
'"I wanted to do something else, someplace else. A lot of people in this world live very successfully in a way totally foreign to us, and I think we can learn from that.'
"Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides) is an island chain located northwest of Australia, between New Caledonia and Fiji. The 150,000 inhabitants are predominantly Melanesian." If you are honest, most of you will readily confess to never having heard of Vanuatu before.
Dave Mandelbaum reports seeing Daveand Janet Levine on Main Street in Hanover in August, taking a break from their third time at Alumni College. For his part, eschewing any thoughts of retirement, Dave has been enlarging his professional scope. He completed, in 1990, the College for Financial Planning program and received his "CFP" designation as a certified financial planner. Dave is in the process of adding that range of services to what his C.P.A. firm now offers to its clients, and he finds the opportunity quite challenging.
