An October editorial in the New York Times marked the fiftieth anniversary of the historic date when Nelson Rockefeller, as coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, invited 130 Latin American journalists to visit the United States to see how we live and work. The program he started has thrived. It was moved to the State Department and then to USIA, where it now resides, and during these 50 years it has brought 100,000 visitors to our shores, including 53 who eventually became, and are now, chiefs of state or heads of government. The Times comments, "Rarely has so modest a public investment reaped so ample a harvest in friendship and enlightenment."

A note from John Marsh says that he and Flavia are both well but "tripped out," having gone to San Francisco and Sedona, Ariz., in July and to Vermont in August. The latter visit was timed to catch their grandchildren before they returned to school.

If you'll excuse another reference to last September's cruise, I initially knew no one among the 450 passenger but I particularly enjoyed meeting two of my tablemates, Barbara and George Ives '44. George is a Washington, D.C., lawyer who is now retired in Sarasota. He bears a marked resemblance to Meade Alcorn, and said he'd been told that before but had never met Meade. He'd had a working relationship with FredScribner during Fred's Washington days. As a past president of Sarasota's Dartmouth Club he was well acquainted with our gang in that area, such as Blanchard, Chittim,Fitzpatrick, Gould, Perkins, Rauch,Shultz, Wiggin, and Alberta Truex.

Our Dave Latham, class secretary of DMS '31, has the usual secretary's need for news. His class notes in the fall issue of Dartmouth Medicine tell us that at the end of May he and Harriet were planting their gardens and fighting "miggies" and mosquitoes. He comments about the wonderful variety of common and uncommon birds they've attracted to their feeders and concludes with a plaintive "Can't the rest of you find some little tidbit that I might put in this column?" Of course, we've seen the Lathams at two reunions since May.
