The response to your secretary's plea for news has been most satisfactory, although not overwhelming. Please keep the pipeline as full as possible. Having made complete fools of themselves, the members of Congress and the Administration finally managed to put together a so-called budget with higher taxes, but without sufficient cuts in expenditures. By the time this issue reaches you we can only hope that war will have been averted in the Middle East and that the much talked-about recession in the U.S. will not have materialized. We can also hope that unfortunate differences among the alumni, student body and faculty will have been overcome.
The Hood Museum was most perceptive in choosing a war theme for its fall exhibitions, one of which (Goya's famous print series known as the Disasters of War and two print series on a soldier's life produced by Callot in the 1630's) was drawn from the collection of our own Bucks Weil.
Eleanor Smith has now been to two fall mini-reunions since Dave died, and she strongly recommends that all widows "take their courage in hand and go ... the warmth of friendship expresses one of the reasons '35 is so unusual." Gus Davis thanks his many friends for their cards and calls about his sudden illness which prevented him from attending the 55th. Jack Donahue didn't make the 55th but joined the group at the hotel in time to have the pleasure of seeing many classmates for the first time since college.
Tahoe Washburn, Link's better half, reports that they spent only one month this year in the High Arctic but did celebrate their 55th anniversary on site just after winter arrived. They later joined many friends to celebrate the 50th of Betty and Bill Lingley in Olympia. Eleanor and Jack AuWerter will also be celebrating their 50th on a cruise ship going through the Panama Canal, and DonSwandon may well be aboard the same vessel. Heidi and Rocky Rockwell drove 1,200 miles from Kathmandu to Lhasa to find Tibet "utterly beguiling" and the Tibetans "wonderfully friendly." They spent three nights at Everest Base Camp (17,000 feet), but no mention of yak butter or milk. Before leaving the U.S. they had a fine brief reunion with the Lingleys and the Washburns at the Seatde airport.
During the winter months members of the class of 1935 are scattered all over Florida. According to Ralph Specht, Sarasota seems to hold the record for being the most attractive, at least for Gladys Bear, Anne Ferries,Jeanne Winkler, Alison and Joe Fellows,Laura and Rey Moulton, Audrey and BobRichter, Gwen and Ken Webster, as well as the Specht twins and their respective spouses, Trudie and Edie.
To close on a sad note, our deepest sympathy to the widows and children of GeorgeBoylston, Stan Britten, Jim Dickinson, PutEmerson, Cy Fulton, BUI Minshall and DonRodgers, all of whom recently passed away. c/o Gordon Farm RR 1, Box 83, Sutton, VT 05867
