How many remember the week before Carnival in February, 1934, when the temperature never rose to zero, even during the day? My roommate, Bud Butterworth, and I will never forget it! We were heeling for Cabin and Trail and our assignment was to hose water onto the artificial pond being built for Outdoor Evening at the DOC house. The night before Carnival began we had the 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. shift. The temperature dropped to 38 degrees below zero and we took ten minute shifts. About 3:25 a.m. Bud returned to the DOC house to report the water streaming out of the hose had frozen into an arc and ceased to flow. Mother nature ended our shift and we headed back to 211 Middle Mass, chilled to the bone."
