Exactly 75 years ago this month Bill Chapman found himself seated behind a desk in a fourth grade elementary school in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and seated across from him was none other than Kern Folkers. Thus began a long friendship that lasted through high school, college, and business life until very recendy when, for some unexplained reason, Kern failed to answer letters. In the meantime, Bill married, had at least one child and two grandchildren, completed a successful career in banking and retired to Lighthouse Point, Fla. For the life story of Kern, you'll have to wait until next month when hopefully either Bill or I will have news for you.
It is always good to get Dud Bonsai's annual card, which generally gives his reason for not having made the last class fall reunion as being too busy with his law duties. This year's reason was more hopeful in noting that he was about to fulfill his final duties as a judge in N.Y.C. I am interpreting this as a promise that he'll be at the next reunion.
Kroggie Krogstad's 1990 Christmas card optimistically looked forward to a better 1991 than his 1990, when a number of misadventures took place. Both he and Gertrude had to give up driving because of eye problems. In August, Kroggie fractured his left hip when he and his German shepherd, Captain, were taking their daily walk. This added to the three previous operations since 1986 on his right hip and one on the left hip. When he wrote, he was using a walker and getting along well. Bob Bliss, after several operations and other problems, has given up his editorship and partial ownership of the Janesville Gazette. He has sold his old house and moved to smaller quarters in a fine condo nearby. The address is 1700 Apache Drive, Janesville, WI 53545. The main news is that he has had two more grandchildren, bringing the total to 22. (If anyone can beat that number, and will let me know, I'll let it be known.)
We are sorry to report that after a brief illness, Norman Fred Page died December 20. He was a long-term member of the class executive committee and a dedicated supporter of the class and of the Colleere.
