I have joyous news from many classmates regarding Dartmouth progeny.
Bill Gruen and his wife, Margaret, welcomed their first child, David McDonald Gruen, into this world on September 30, 1986. Bill's father, Richard Gruen '34, reports that "after the Navy game I drove over to Washington and greeted my new grandson, then just five days old. He opened his eyes and immediately recognized by my '34 cap that he had arrived in a Dartmouth family. " Bill has been an enthusiastic teacher of history at the Burke School in Washington and recently passed his CPA exam. He is now working full-time as a CPA with a tax accounting firm in Washington but continues to teach one history course at the Burke School. Marge was with the United Way in the Washington, D.C., area but is now pursuing an advance degree in public health at Johns Hopkins University. Congratulations to you both.
Bob Conway and his wife, Lynda, have also had reason to celebrate. On December 31, 1986, Phillip Christopher Conway came into their lives. Bob was recently appointed director of the Joint Law Center at Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C. Again, congratulations to one and all.
John Hauge has recently moved to the Washington, D.C., area. He is working with Senator Chaffee of Rhode Island in regard to banking legislation.
American Can Company recently announced the promotion of David I. Chemerow to the position of senior vice president and corporate controller. In addition to responsibility for the company's financial statements, the analysis and budgeting of operations, and the company's risk management, Dave also assumes responsibility for corporate information systems and services. He is also a member of the company's operating committee. Dave joined American Can in 1975 and has held a variety of financial management positions. He was named assistant treasurer in 1980 and vice president and treasurer in 1982. Dave went on to Tuck School after Dartmouth and graduated with highest distinction from Tuck in 1975. Dave and his wife, Doreen, reside in Stamford, Conn.
Finally, a letter from Dave Bracken sends news that he and Liz (along with Anne, 10, and Alison, 7) have moved back to Atlanta. Dave is currently with Bell South where he is responsible for the selection and development of 24,000 managers. Dave said that since he went to Georgia Tech for graduate school, "It's like coming home." Liz is currently working for a ob-gyn office and Suzanne King, wife of Thad King, is the Bracken family orthodontist. Dave reports that Suzanne was the first female orthodontist in Georgia!
That's it for now. I stepped down from the presidency of the Alumni Council this spring when my term expired. It has been a very fulfilling and enjoyable year. Regardless, I am staying on as your class scribe so please send along some news when you have a chance. See you next month.
