You have made it through summer—and now it's time to be in Hanover for our mini. In addition to seeing old friends and the Bucknell game, our memory-laden campus needs to be circled and the Hood Museum has fascinating new exhibits to visit. You might even want to pick up some history en route by driving through Plymouth, Vt., and seeing the Coolidge birthplace.
Speaking of history, I recently checked some old Marty Dwyer records that showed our birthdates. Our 664 entering classmates had birth years from 1907 to 1915—with a surprising 146 in 1913, 17 in 1914 and the late Alan Hewitt in 1915. The College recently lauded Alan's $710,000 endowment in support of Baker Library and the drama program.
Thanks to Margaret Applin, I now have a 1934 Freshman Green Book, and it shows that we came from 35 states. New York had 153, Massachusetts 143, Illinois 56, Newjersey 53, Connecticut 42, Ohio 38 ... down to Texas' one. Florida and 12 other states had none. The Green Book Board included these still active '34s: Art Grime, FredRobbe, StanSilverman, Tom Beers, Stu Barber, and Art Director Leon Lindheim.
I talked with one of our Maine residents, Bill Carr, recently. Fie is mostly retired but still involved in urban renewal and real estate appraisal. And when I reached Van Thorne on Long Island I learned that while he too is officially retired he still keeps busy in public relations—those committees don't let chairmen retire.
One of our longtime Buckeyes, JohnAnderson, has been on center stage at TV interviews and bookstore parties, and had a big write-up with picture in "Tuck Today" all about his new book, "Always in Love." It's his novelized life story, and Dartmouth comes out strong in its early chapters. You can order a copy via 1-800-882-3272, with Mastercard or Visa in hand.
The really big news from Hanover recently was word that our Alumni Magazine won Newsweek's 1991 Award as best periodical in higher education. Congratulations to the editors and staff!
When you get to Hanover you'll of course see the Mayo Cohens, and they can tell you what it was like to attend at Elderhostel in Padua, Italy. Anyone else been at an Elderhostel overseas recently?
