KAYAKER DANA CHLADEK '85 ISN'T THE first Dartmouth-educated woman to medal in the Summer Olympics: that distinction belongs to rower Carlie Geer 'BO, who won a silver in 1984 in Los Angeles. But Chladek's bronze in singles Whitewater kayaking means that every Dartmouth alumna competing in Barcelona (there was only one) came home with a medal, while her aquatic teammates—Jim Moulton '84 and Steven Shellans '82returned empty-handed. (Other Dartmouth personnel at the Games included NBC canoe/kayak analyst Eric Evans '72 and rowing trainer Linda Zoller-McKibbin.)

Meanwhile, in only his second marathon ever, Bob Kempainen '88 qualified for Barcelona in April with a third-place finish in the U.S. Olympic Trials. To train for the Games, Kem- painen had taken a year off from his medical studies at the University of Minnesota. Though The New York Times called him the next lead- ing distance runner in the United States, the Mediterranean sun and the rigors of interna- tional competition proved too much for Kem- painen: In the Barcelona marathon, he placed 17th, with a time of 2:15:53.
