DARTMOUTH: NOT FOR SALE

HOW MUCH IS DARTMOUTH'S name worth? When Glassboro State College recently received a $100 million gift from a New Jersey businessman and his wife, the school renamed itself Rowan College in their honor. But Dartmouth's million-dollar donors will have to settle for their monikers on laboratories and gymnasiums. The school's name, says Director of Development John Hays, is no longer for sale.

More than two centuries ago, Eleazar Wheelock named his College after one of his first benefactors, the Earl of Dartmouth, in exchange for a £50 contribution to the English trust from which the College was funded. "The Second Earl of Dartmouth got a heck of a t. deal," notes Hays.

The Earl gota bargain.
