Alumni Award: Frederick Martin Rothenberg '64
October 1992

Fred describes himself as basically "a dull guy who just gets up every day and goes to work." Well, let's take a look at that self-inflicted accolade! We suspect the members of his prestigious Tampa law firm, with offices throughout Florida and in Washington, D.C., have other ideas. At the same job now for 23 years, he shows up early and stays late. He specializes in employee benefits, taxation, trusts and estates, and corporate and business law. Not much treading water in that routine.

Outside the office, he doesn't even know what a recliner is. Easy going and mild-tempered, Fred has over the years set a Tampa tempo. He's been a longtime member of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and on its board of governors; a president and director of the Hillsborough Community Health Center; a director of the Tampa Bay Estate Planning Council; charter member and secretary of the Joseph J. Lumia Foundation; a member of a local temple; vice president of the Tampa University Club; and, of course, active in the Tampa and Florida Bar Associations. In education he has been a trustee of the University of Tampa, a school board member, and PTA president. Fred and Mary Sue have raised three sons—and already sent one through Dartmouth, class of 1991.

None of this is surprising if we look at Fred's Dartmouth heritage. He was a cum laude government major, an ROTC-er, and a student heeler and writer in the Sports Information office. After law school and two years in the army, he was ready to serve his alma mater. Fred has been a class agent, a reunion committee member, an enrollment officer, regional agent, a member of his class executive committee, several major fundraising committees, and the Dartmouth Alumni Council, and president of the Tampa Dartmouth Club.

So much for this dull guy who gets up every day. We're pretty pleased that he has kept pulling back the covers so that the College could, with pleasure and gratitude, present him with its coveted Dartmouth Alumni Award.
