As promised, and with a little help from my friends (i.e. JimMiller and Christopher Gates), I am going to paint the picture of Perry Ballard's wedding to Jane Roberts on August 15. Chris filled in the final details last night as he was looking over midtown Manhattan, the East River at the U.N., Citicorp, and Yankee Stadium, and I was busily taking notes in my study and looking over the rooftops of Paris ... I mean Macon, Ga.
The weekend festivities were warm and heartfelt, quite different from our roguish days of ten years ago. The parties were grand and fan and we all thank Perry and Jane.
In attendance was Jim Miller, who is the tax legislative counsel for the Department of the Treasury. His wife, Nancy, is a special assistant to President Bush and handles presidential appointments and special personnel matters. They have two children, Caroline 13 and Kathleen 18, and live in Alexandria, Va.
Rick O. Williams and his wife, Jennifer, flew from Hong Kong for the event. Rick O. works for Goldman Sachs and advises the firm on investments as principal in the Far East while Jennifer perfects her tennis game. We got to see their one-year-old son Tucker in Atlanta. Rick was actually the emcee for two events. Along with Steve Allison and his wife, Kristin, Rick hosted a surprise fifth birthday party for Andrew Gates, his godson and son of Christopher Gates. Steve and Kristin and their three sons, Benjamin, Graham, and Brendon, live in Concord where Steve is a partner in the real-estate firm of Darmon & Allison.
Chris Gates, who was his charming self in Atlanta, has recentl yjoined First Boston, where he continues to advies individual family groups and small institutions in investment-related inquiries. He lives in Manhattan.
John Fisher and his wife, Alison, were also in attendance. John is the government bond trader for Bear Stearns & Co. Inc. in New York and commutes from Westport, Conn., into the city. They have a son, Jack. Incidentally, Perry's new father-in-law was John's algebra teacher.
Tripp Heard, a cardiologist in Mobile, and his wife, Lauren, an attorney, were spotted on the dance floor. They have two children, Cameron and Sam. George Vorys, who is working in the legislature in the state of Ohio, made a cameo appearance. Also in attendance were Bruce Williamson and his wife, Alice. Bruce is employed by the Sara Lee Corporation (nobody doesn't like Sara Lee). They have two children, John and Jessica.
John Halsey flew in from New York where he is the president of Peconic Land Trust. Land trusts are the fastest growing conservation organizations in the country. John is involved in planning, land acquisition, and land management. He and his wife, Janis, and one-yearold baby jenna live in South Hampton, Long Island. And Doug Lind flew all the way from the City of Angels, where he is the director of property management for GBW Properties. Doug and his wife, Louise, live in L.A.
Representing Atlanta were DaveCranshaw and his wife, Jane, and KenCanfield and his wife, Lucy.
Perry has had an interesting career growing up in Atlanta, attending Dartmouth, coming back to Emory Medical School, doing an internship and residency in New York at the Cornell Medical Center and Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a fellowship in infectious disease at Tufts in Boston, another fellowship in hematology at Cornell, and returning home to practice hematology and oncology. I have had a lot of inquiries about the wedding event. However, because of my close and warm relationship with my brothers at Dartmouth, I have refused to answer the following questions about the wedding: (1) Name five people who went to the Gold Club until 5:00 a.m. to learn to dance the Lambada. (2) Who is Beth Janice? (3) What advice did Rick O. Williams give the taxi driver who rescued the guys at the tuxedo rental? (4) Whatever happened to Perry's leopard bar? (5) Why did George Vorys want to go to Tucker, Ga.?
