When one is a criminal defense lawyer, one is often accused of being in a conspiracy with the government, especially if things are not working out and it is looking more and more like jail will be the client's next mailing address. I attempt to gain his or her confidence by proclaiming "I fight the government and protect your constitutional rights!" I had this convention recently in the car on the way to see the probation officer, Hank Creep, who would write the presentence report prior to sentencing, Little did I know that Hank had the FBI waiting to arrest my client, Bennie-the-Safe-Cracker, on the suspicion that Bennie was on his way to "points unknown." At the hearing, in an effort to reestablish the destroyed attorney-client relationship, I argued adamantly for an O.R. bond and won. Haven't seen Bennie since.

Meg Winthrop will not have her poem published in the Alumni Magazine as it has been seized by the FBI and is being held in evidence at the CIA crime lab in McClean, Va. It appears that the poem had some subversive overtones which the government is studying. Meg has retained William Kunstler, Racehorse Harry Hanes, F. Lee Bailey, and others during her pending investigation. Good luck, Meg! Please write.
