AFTER SETTING BACK fraternity rush to sophomore fall, the deans have eased up a bit, allowing the Inter-Fraternity Council to establish new rules to bring back the unaffiliated houses and help the smaller houses increase membership. Rushees now must attend an open house and sign in at at least three houses to be eligible to sink a bid at any house.
The reason behind this change was to prevent a "suicide rush," where candidates seek admission to only one house.
Open House ran October 1 and 2, with rush technically being held on the third. It ended up being exactly like a three-day rush period, with bids being handed out after all three nights. If a rushee was not offered a bid at any house on the first or second nights, his name was distributed to all the houses via a database developed at registration. Any house that wants may extend him an open bid.
"The new system was implemented without any assistance from the administration," said IFC Rush Chair Bill Lapcevic '93,
who adds that the policy was a success. The number of students rushing this year was up over last year.
