We are into mid-January land our snow cover has come and gone several times. Much to my chagrin, cross-country skiing has not fit into my activities yet this winter, and I don't downhill ski anymore.
However, Polly Chinhind has been doing both whenever possible, and she also plays paddle tennis regularly—an outdoor winter sport for the hardy. Polly, you may recall, won the contest to name "The Dartmouth Skiway," and has free use of that fine facility for life!
Ruth Brittan is a steady user of the tennis courts in the Leverone Fieldhouse.
Mimi and Gene Davis are in the process of moving to a retirement community. They are both fine, and Gene gets around well with the aid of a cane.
Herm Richardson writes from their winter quarters in Mt. Dora, Fla., that beginning next fall, he and Margaret will be braving New England weather year 'round in Laconia, N.H. Their home there is next door to that of their daughter and family.
Bill Dodge of New London, N.H., has given up his house and moved into a condominium in the same town.
Every year we try to watch the TV showing of the program at the Kennedy Center in Washington when the president honors outstanding American artists. This year, among the honorees was Robert Shaw, the famous choral director. We later learned that while in the navy, Art Nighswander sang with one of Shaw's choruses.
The students here at Dartmouth who are keeping alive the tradition of Winter Carnival statuary are busily working in their "snowboxes" in the middle of campus. At this point drey have gathered enough snow for three tiers. After seeing that, I drove around a rather bare campus to see if any dormitories, fraternities, or sororities had started snow piling yet, but as of now there are no other signs of the upcoming carnival.
However, another siht is worth mentioning: the United Way barometer poster outside College Hall, which depicts Dartmouth's participation. The students have reached 70 percent of their $5,000 goal, and the college community 99 percent of a $158,000 goal. Dartmouth is among very few colleges where students participate in that community-outreach activity.
