A vintage '51 scribe resurfaced in my mail. DaveWiggins, peerless party pianist, has been in the mortgage business in Wauwatosa, Wise., since 1971. Ten years ago, before AIDS became a terrifying crisis, he worked as a volunteer, helping people with this then-new disease, driving them to the doctor or dentist, helping them with shopping and other errands. It was the beginning of a buddy system for victims of the mysterious affliction. As the demands for services grew, Dave and other laymen started ed the Milwaukee AIDS Project. He served on the board of the new organization, helped hire an executive director, and negotiated the purchase of a building to house what was to become the AIDS Resource Center for Wisconsin. Dave says, "At the start, it was what needed to be done. But I continue to be heavily involved. I see great progress in the management of the disease—there's a place to go, housing, financial assistance, medical care, a buddy system. But cure? I don't see any sign of a cure." It's been ten years, and Dave Wiggins is still active in the fight.
If you send out a Christmas letter to family or friends, how about including this columnist in your list? We promise to be discreet with your family secrets, but it's nice for the class jotter to have a little backlog.
The Washington Post reports, "President Clinton has nominated Washington attorney Al Moses to be ambassador to Romania. Moses, president of the American Jewish Committee, was special counsel to President Jimmy Carter, handling Billygate for him. He has been heavily involved in American- Romanian relations for many years, working on Jewish emigration issues and on behalf of dissidents, including those imprisoned for Chri stian activities.''
As publicity chairman for our 45 th Reunion, I have decided to launch my campaign right here before your eyes. I called Chairman JohnClayton to get briefed and found that he was golfing in Scotland. No help there. Co-chairman Dick Price, though, was already at his post and confirmed the dates: Monday-Thursday, June 10-13, 1996. These days, a couple of years zing right by, so put it on your planner now and start working towards the day. John and Dick have staffed their committee with pros like Dave Hall and Joe Boissy (treasurers) and Henry Nachman and JackSkewes (food and beverages). Jack will also handle athletics. Then there's Joe Caldwell (entertainment); Peirce McKee and SandyMcDonald (registration); and Bill Boynton (souvenirs). Peter Martin will be organizing the special seminar program. Finally, DickBucey and Bill Leffler will lead the memo- rial service. If you have a special interest in one of these areas, please speak up. Your help would be welcome. Just contact John, Dick, or the activity chairmen themselves.
If you have never been to a reunion, take it on faith that this is the experience of a lifetime.
