Spring can't be far away the students have left campus to catch the warmer sun and hopefully will bring it back with them later in March. While we have spent much time indoors, we have been reminiscing, and among many fond memories our gatherings on Governors Island came to mind. Many classmates through the years have mentioned the good times we all had and Sgt. Sodano's fabulous buffets with the shrimpfilled ice carvings and the "haunches" of beef!
This class knows how to feast! How about Bill Magenau's awesome oysters at class affairs lately? We have also been fortunate to have Bill's daughter Carol sing on several occasions. She has a magnificent soprano voice and sings with the Handel Society Chorus in Hanover. In early March they performed Honegger's "King David" at the Hop.
Larry recently received from Bob Averill '72 a computer-scanned copy of a Thanksgiving Day 1925 photo of a climb up Mt. Lafayette. The photo, which hangs at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, was taken by Larry's brother Dick '27. Pictured are leader Hank Lamb '26 and three '29ers: Dick Sanders, Bruce Woodman, and Harry Lewis. Bob Averill is doing a great job with the his Chubbers publication for Outing Club alumni.
Petie and Frank Foster's grandson Whitney Spaulding '89 and a friend have opened a textbook store called Wheelock Books here in town and have had encouraging fall and winter terms. Pay them a visit when next in Hanover; they are two floors above Peter Christian's Restaurant on Main Street.
We occasionally run into Joe Morgan's son Spencer '60 who lives here and is active in Hanover affairs. Joe was a regular at our Governors Island get-togethers.
My mentor Hal Ripley and I chat regularly by phone, and he is a great support. We'll end this with one of his verses: My attention span is looney, My grip is getting puny,
But the reason for this super-skeptic frown Is, no matter where I look, I have yet to trust a book Whose back cover says, "You just can't put it down."
