This is being written nine days before Bobbie Cantrell and I are to be married, on March 21, in Wayne, Penn., just outside of Philadelphia. You will see a new address at the bottom of the column, as I am moving into her home in an "adult community" named Hershey's Mill.
Grant Keeler telephoned to congratulate me and to give me the names of a couple of good places to stay (The Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville, Va., and The Inn at Little Washington, Va.) en route home from Florida, where Bobbie and I are going on the Auto Train. I hope the apple blossoms will be in full bloom as we drive through that lush orchard country in early April. Grant knew these places because he and Betty had just returned from a happy trip down the East Coast of Florida, and backup the West Coast. This was a change from their usual winter visit to St. Croix, and gave them a chance to have dinner with Harryand M.L. Vanbenschoten in Naples (refugees from winter in New Canaan, Conn.) Grant and Betty also visited Joe and HildyEly, who have retired to Sarasota, Fla., after spending much of their working lives abroad, mostly in Mexico, which they love.
Nelson and Gerrie Graves have a third grandchild born in Namibia in December; the others were born in Gray Paree!
Charlie Abbe retired last June from Bank East. He and Dodie left in December for a four-month trip through the South. They spend their time fly-fishing at their remote cabin in Maine and near their condo in Concord, N.H.
John Pennington has lived in Eugene, Ore., since 1953 and is now vice president of sales with Pennington Crossarm Co., supplying the Electrical Utility Industry.
Emile Hudak keeps in touch with Lou and Ann Bressett (of Lou's Restaurant) in Hanover. Lou's partner Peter Lihatsh lives in Etna.
Joel Leavitt played baseball at the Red Sox Fantasy Baseball Camp in Winter Haven and played 18 holes with Arnold Palmer! Oh Boy!
Larry Huntley has moved to John Knox Village, an elegant complex in Tampa. So it goes.
I am sad to report that Scotty Olin died in his sleep on February 18. He was a dear friend, fraternity brother in Theta Delta Chi, lifetime member of the class executive committee, and class secretary twice: 1950-65 and 1986-90. I am sure he wrote more of these '50 columns than anyone else. He probably knew—and was known by more of our classmates than any other '50. We will miss him at reunions and minis. Head Agent Bill Carpenter suggests that many of us might be moved to make gifts to the Alumni Fund or to our Class Endowment Fund in memory of Scott, one of our most loyal and active members. Among his many contributions to Dartmouth were Scott's two sons, Eric '78 and Dirk '81. Gifts to the Alumni Fund may be sent in the usual manner, earmarked in memory of Scott C. Olin. Gifts to the Class Endowment should be sent to Treasurer BenShaver, 195 West Paddock Circle, Arnold, MD 21012. Remember that our '50 Endowment Fund is intended to fund a Great Issues type of lecture series honoring John Sloan Dickey. And note that memorial gifts for all classmates will be welcomed by either fund.
