Good news from DickEchikson: he and Barbara Pfeiffer were married on August 2 "by my old roomie Sack—or, more respectfully, His Honor Federal Judge H. Lee Sarokin. It was a small family ceremony at Lee's home." Congratulations and best wishes to Bobbie and Dick.
The 1992 Alumni Fund set a new record for achievement, with results of $12,807,287, an improvement over 1991 by 10.3 percent, and over the previous record (1989) of 4.1 percent. This also betters the 1992 goal by 3.2 percent. Three hundred thirty-seven of our classmates gave a total of $162,884—39 in the leadership category ($1,769 and over). This put '50 in second place in the Green Derby competition (among the classes '49—'55). So kudos to Head Agent Bill Carpenter and his assistant class agents. Next year let's get first.
Sanford Pooler died of cancer on June 22 in Boston, where he practiced law. Our sympathy to Carolyn and their children, Sanford Jr. and Lauren. This is my last column as your class secretary. At the October meeting of the executive committee my old friend and Wigwam barracks neighbor Jack Kent became secretary. Ed Tuck became president and Bill Carpenter vice president, according to our schedule of advancement of officers. Jack's and Barbara's address is 2 Central Green, Winchester, MA 01890.1 hope you will send many news items to him, as well as the green cards to JoeMedlicott for his newsletter.
I have had a good time being your secretary. Thanks to all of you who have given me tidbits for the column. Bobbie and I hope to see all of you at the big 45th Reunion (if not before), which is coming up all too soon!
Anote from Joy Shaver: "Ben broke a foot bone in June and lost about six weeks of the best sailing weather we have had, but all is well now. The Sailing Club of the Chesapeake visits the Russian compound on the Corsica River—by water—this weekend. Should be interesting: toasts back and forth and dinner to follow." Tough duty!
Ben, who is class treasurer, recently sent a report to the 125-plus classmates who have contributed to the class endowment fund since it was inaugurated five years ago. You might recall that the fund is to establish a Class of 1950 John Sloan Dickey Fellowship "to bring internationally renowned leaders to the Dartmouth campus for brief periods of lectures, seminars, and similar programs for undergraduates of the College." $22,631 has been raised toward the $100,000 we seek by the year 2000, our 50th Reunion year. The fund is currently fully invested in T. Rowe Price Growth Stock, and Treasury Bond Funds. Ben writes, "One way to help the cause is to offer a facility for memorial gifts... We don't want to compete with the College's bequest program, but small amounts—traditionally directed to someone's favorite charity—would be very welcome and helpful." Our warm thanks to Ben for the superb stewardship of this important class project and our other financial affairs.
