Today is St. Patrick's Day and the birthday of my grandfather Patsy Donovan, who was born in County Cork, Ireland. A center fielder, he played professional baseball with Louisville and Washington and starred with the Pittsburgh Pirates for eight seasons, notching six consecutive .300 seasons. In 1900 he led the National League in 45 swipes, and he stole 518 bases during his career. One morning early in my career when a disgruntled federal magistrate was admonishing my course and my street-wise client and accusing me of having "too much of an Ivy-League education,' he blurted out, "What is your background, anyway?"
"Base stealing," I answered, and not a bad background to have."
