Yo-Li Chan was quoted in an Alumni Fund mailing concerning business leadership, and I think that what he had to say is worth repeating, for there is no doubt that the Dartmouth campus has affected us all over the years: "Architects are fond of the saying, 'We shape our buildings and they shape us.' Nine years on the campus as a faculty boy and College student taught me the symbolic power of high ground (the College on the Hill), the visual power of color (the green and white of Dartmouth Row), the grace of proportion (Reed Hall's facade) and, most important, the sense of community that is created by the open space of the College Green. As I create spaces today, I am strengthened by the knowledge that beauty like this endures. It may not say so in the catalog, but the campus is a great teacher."

Phyllis and I ran into Art Rauch at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, N.Y.,early in June. When I pressed him for news for this column, he stated that nothing of interest was taking place. Art's wife, Lynn, immediately chirped in with "What do you mean? What about your daughter Janine, D'88, being in her second year at Dartmouth Medical School and engaged to marry Jevin Eagle, also D'88? As a matter of fact, they are being married in August." Art himself has retired from the pharmaceutical industry and spends part of his time managing his portfolio and the rest of the time traveling.

I go on a bit about the above encounter in order to encourage you guys to report to meand if not me, to Herb Hillman. It is all very well to rewrite news clippings sent to me by the College, but I prefer the personal communication.

Having said that, I then received a letter from Larry Martz stating that he feels out of touch and wants to be a name in boldface! Larry retired from Newsweek three years ago and now works half-time for the magazine doing various projects on a consulting basis. During his own time he has put together a book coming out in August titled MakingSchools Better: How Parents and Teachers Acrossthe Country Are Taking Action—and How YouCan Too. Quite a mouthful. Larry goes on to say that, "I have a regular tennis game with Lo-Yi Chan, who usually beats me. I see RonLehrman, not as often as I could wish. DickMay writes that he may be returning to this country after several decades in Australia. Howard Sloane has asked me to be on a panel with him at the convention of the Association for Behavior Analysis in San Francisco this month, and I have unwarily accepted.I think he is getting even for something I did to his car in the spring of 1953. And I exchange an occasional letter with Larry Mamlet in California. Apart from growing old, I have no complaints."

The New York Times reports that BobClements has been appointed president of Marsh & McLennan Companies, a market leader in many of its businesses which include insurance and reinsurance brokering, consulting, and investment management. Bob has been with the company and various subsidiaries since 1959, most recently as vice chairman of the parent organization.
