"I would be hard put now to defend some of the words that came out of our mouths," says Ed Levin of his days as a strident SDS leader in '69,"but I'm still socially conscious."

He learned woodworking in a commune and is now a designer and builder of traditional style timber-frame houses and a founding director of the Timber Framers Guild of North America. Many of the Guild's members, he says, are people like him who had intellectual backgrounds but "sought to lead meaningful lives by working with their hands."
