During the latter part of summer the class last three classmates and one wife Jane and Chris Born died within days of each other in early August. At the end of that month Earl Liberty died, and Dr. DavidCogan passed away in mid-September.
Chris and Jane lived in the Portland area of Maine, and for years had a summer camp on Moosehead Lake, where Larry and I used to see them frequently.
Earl and Alice Liberty had retired to Charleston, S.C., from Clemson, where Earl was Director of Purchasing with Clemson University for many years.
David and Frances Cogan, both medical doctors in the field of ophthalmology, lived in Chevy Chase, Md. David graduated from and taught at the Harvard medical School for years, and is considered the founder of the specialty of neuro-ophthalmology.
All three of these classmates had written about their lives for the 25th Reunion Book (which I often refer to). They will all be greatly missed, and the class extends sympathy to their families.
The Manchester (N.H.) Magazine of July listed "The Most Brilliant Legal Minds of N.H.", and among them we are proud to note two distinguished classmates, Arthur Highswauder, LL.B. 1932 Columbia Law School, and Dudley Orr, LLB 1933 Harvard Law School.
Recently I had a delightful letter from Melinda Marsh Bloomer 1984 of Evanston, Ill. She writes of seeing Al Welch riding his bicycle in 90-degree August weather, looking fit and dandy. He is enjoying both his excellent health and the companionship of his wife. She comments that Al must have the same charm and energy he most certainly had possessed back at die Big Green, and that he misses the incomparable Hanover environs. Her letter ends with, "What a special place Dartmouth is, and what fine men and women have had the opportunity to know her."
This verse by Rip certainly fits my column this month:
I don't tell lies; I plagiarize. (We're all each other's debtors.) The lilts and rhymes Are really mine The thoughts are from my betters.
