Betty and Bernie Boyle sent a most welcome letter from their four-month summer residence at Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., prior to their departure for the next eight months in Naples, Fla. They reside there in Bendy Village, a 550-resident retirement home on a 90-acre campus not unlike that of a small college. A nine-hole, par-three golf course surrounds 22 three-story, dormitory-type buildings, a newly built 120-bed hospital, a large dining and administration building, and associated maintenance and utility buildings. In their building reside three other Dartmouths,George Lowe '30, Chuck Simmons '30, Holden Higbee '42, and spouses.
Betty is a writer for the monthly Bendy Breeze, the champion of nine-hole weekly golfers, and Bernie serves on the committees for overseeing the golf course and for landscaping. This fall begins their 25 th year of wintering in Naples, but Bernie has kept his roots not far from the Atlantic Ocean in Manchester, Andover (Phillips Academy), and, of course, in Hanover. This summer the Boyles attended the College's second week of Alumni College. The course was "Paradise Lost: Promise and Peril in the World Order," which I hope provoked cogent questions and lively and heated discussions. The Boyles confirmed that Marny Hawkins was enrolled in the course, and she was staying in the newly and elegantly remodeled Lodge. Bernie also found time to chat with two members of this autumn's football squad who predicted a repeat of last year's Ivy championship.
Then came a call from Bill Lyons asking for information—which I was able to supply on getting tickets to the Penn game and the Philadelphia Dartmouth Club reception on September 18, on which date Bill and I seemed planned to join a '31 mini-reunion. lam sorry to relate, however, that on August 6 Bill lost his wife, Flossie, after 61 years of marriage. We salute Class Agent Dave Borkum and helpers, heroes, and heroines of '31 in surpassing the percentage goals for contributors and amount contributed to the 1992-93 Alumni Fund. Start thinking about next year's.
