Clark Griffiths's trips to the Northwest Territory certainly sounds like a perfect start to retirement. Thanks, Clark, for sharing it and writing the column.
Stuart Smith Jr. has been named to the board of trustees of the University of New Hampshire. I am sure it will be an interesting challenge for Stu. Bob Staz of Camp Hill, Penn., has recently been elected president of the Pennsylvania Association of Milk Dealers. Bob's dairy, Brookwood Farms Dairy, will be celebrating its 100th year in business in 1994. Congratulations, Bob! Erich Kunzel continues to be mentioned as a possible successor to John Williams as the director of the Boston Pops. During the summer Erich returned to The Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestra Musicians for the first time in 25 years to conduct a memorial in honor of his mentor, Pierre Monteux. Erich also has a summer residence on Swan's Island.

The honors are piling up we recently reported that Michael is president of the State Society.
I received a wonderful letter from WillisBrooks. Not only did he volunteer to write an obituary for Bruce Baule, but he also wrote about his literacy work at the University of North Carolina. Willis helped start a student organization to battle the illiteracy problem in the area. This program has been extremely successful. Even more thoughtful is the story Willis sent along about a student he is working with. That student is one of the members of the UNC housekeeping staff who, until recently, could not read the label on the bottle of cleaning fluid he used. Today he is reading Martin Luther King's The Peaceful Warrior. Most thoughtful, he is reading stories told by himself. Part of Willis's teaching process is to transcribe stories that the student has told him so that the student can have the experience of reading back his own words. What a great idea for this 58-year-old student to now be able, for the first time in his life, to see on the printed page stories that have rambled in his mind since childhood. Thanks very much for sharing your story, Willis. It is a wonderful one.
Finally, Bob Macdonald won the award for being the roughest, toughest, bestest player on his veterans hockey team last winter. As you can well imagine, he has been spending summer and fall eagerly awaiting the next season. Good luck, Bob. Don't forget that, with all that success, everyone will be out to take a shot at you.
I am all out of news and need your letters and calls. Please let me hear from yon.
