"NEVER let your child flush onions down tie toilet. They swell and block the pipes." This sage advice comes to us from Lea Sakura Fowler. She thoughtfully sent a great note complete with family
portraits and other reflections following up on my call this summer. Lea writes that she has spent most of her post-Dartmouth years being a mom (of four) and becoming an age group-record-setting runner in one-mile, 10K, and half-marathon distances. The letter makes it sound like Lea derives some of her energy from her solar-powered home.
Two publications cited Tom Barnico for his recent award for Best Supreme Court Briefs. Scanning the headline I thought the high court had embarked on a publicity campaign with Tom sporting a new line of jockeys. Not so. Tom and a colleague in the Massachusetts Attorney General's office cowrote a brief outlining a tax case between New Hampshire and some neighboring states over Seabrook Nuclear Plant property taxes. Tom, did you get background for this case while breakfasting at Hal's?
Dave Haraway's diligence on behalf of the College for die last four years was recognized this summer when he was promoted to senior associate director, Bequests and Trusts. Dave, you might use this bumper sticker on the job: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
A note from the College corrected me on the amount of money in the Rick Angulo World Experience Fund. It stands at $50,905—a wonderful and meaningful achievement.
Richard Zakin has had a busy year. He and his wife, Barbara, had a son named Charles Michael in the spring; and in the summer Rich was made partner specializing in real estate for New York law firm Bryan Cave. I'm sure Rich learned "location, location, location" as the guiding tenets of real estate during freshman year in South Mass.
Rich's freshman year roommate, CharlieKrupanszky, called me from his cross-country tour to tell me his VW Westfalia had blown an engine in Hanover. Charlie and his fiancee, Jennifer, were doing a big road trip before settling back down in Colorado. Those buses were never made to challenge Balch Hill, Charlie. Happy trails.
This month's deadline calls took me to San Diego Naval Base in search of Dr. OlehHaluszka. A very official receptionist reported that Oleh was on TAD" (for non-military types, that's temporarily assigned duty). Let us know how the gastroenterology business is, Oleh.
I got a hold of Bill Hammett at his office in Burlingame, Calif. I had last seen Bill when he taught an options class to me about eight years ago. He must have been a better teacher than trader because our entire class passed. Bill reported that after years of losing lots of money trading in various markets, he returned to his family radio/TV consulting business. He and his young family probably sleep (and live) better now.
Another call found Bob End embarking on a new business venture. After years in Merrill Lynch's LBO group, Bob and some partners have gone out on their own in a similar business. The rest of Bob's time is spent with his wife and three kids in Summit, N.J., where Bob says weekends are spent shuttling various sports teams from game to game.
Peter Bernhard called while on a business trip to the Bay Area. Peter and his family are in Alexandria, Va., where his life sounds similar to Bob's. Work in the publishing world and on weekends with teams and kids. And they both mentioned that Jeff Mckee surfaces for his share of parties from his base in Philadelphia.
Thanks to many of you for your notes and returned calls. It's a great help.
