Well, they made it! Martin Buerger dropped me a postcard from Bern, Switzerland, to let me know that the Buergers had arrived safely at his new Dialog assignment and that “So far, the merging of the businesses is going well, and we are beginning to enjoy our new surroundings. There is much to see and do and not enough weekends. ” The postcard was of bear cubs playing at a local zoo, so Martin must be telling the truth!
I managed to catch Stan Arend in his office at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council in Boston. The Council is a district created by the state of Massachusetts to represent 191 local communities in the distribution of federal transportation funds, economic analy- sis and stimulus, and environmental control. Stan has been the director of administration and finance at the Council for four years. Prior to that, he was with Employment Resources Inc., administering federal and state grants, and was assistant comptroller and systems analyst for the town of Arling- ton for five years. Stan has master’s degrees in accounting and computer information sys- tems, both from Bentley College. Stan and Mary and their two children, Jonathan 10 and Victoria 5, live in Hanover, Mass.
Hearing that Stan had worked in my home- town, Arlington, inspired me to look for other Arlington connections, so I called Tuck Bai- ley at his office at 22 Mill Street. Tuck moved the family insurance agency from Boston to Arlington about 13 years ago. After gradua- tion he signed on at Dartmouth National Bank before graduating from Tuck School in 1978 and then joining General Reinsurance for a few years. (Naturally, I suggested that he would want to make his mistakes with someone else’s money before joining the fam- ily agency). H.T. Baily Insurance specializes in excess and surplus insurance lines, finding a market for insurance deals that don’t fit entirely within a single insurer’s limits—the Lloyd’s of London-type deals as well as some less dramatic ones like liquor liability and vacant building policies. Tuck, Carol, Kristin 14andTucker 12, live in Carlisle, Mass. Some of you may have spotted both Tucks in Hanover for the Harvard/Dartmouth game, where young Tucker celebrated a birthday and Dad got inspired for an Alumni Fund lead- ership assignment he has taken on.
