In April of '91 I wrote about running into Warren Jurovaty on the commuter train and about how much he enjoyed working at John Hancock Properties. A few months later I was running into him in the lobby at Bank of Boston. By that time, neither insurance companies nor commercial banks wanted to own real estate, but only insurance companies could make a conscious decision to stop acquiring it. So Warren, being very good at what he did, made the jump from acquiring to unloading. (I have been hesitant to mention the change since Warren claims that all you need is a write-up in the Alumni Mag about how great everything is going to swing the tide. His success at Bank of Boston is evident, however, so I decided it was safe to mention his whereabouts.)

I myself no longer take the commuter train nor reside at the head office. These days I work out of Bank of Boston's Dorchester operations facility as a product and payments system consultant. Technically, I'm working on the application of electronics to the paper check process, but I'm also something of a "payments-system risk" specialist and so do numerous odd jobs related to that claim.

When I get in over my head, I just yell for Roy Davis. Roy is systems guru for almost all of the major electronic payments networks and several related information networks at Bank of Boston. He generally comes to work at five or six in the morning so he can actually get some work done without the phone ringing. And he proves what a good husband and father he is by sharing taxi duties for his two kids. I love to tease him about how he just isn't the same old Roy who helped me hold up the bar at AD. The knowledge also helps assure that my phone calls get returned!

Ted Mertz still rides the same commuter train as Warren. Ted is director of product development for cash management at Bank of Boston, having joined the corporation several years ago from Mellon. We have worked together since his arrival but didn't realize we were both '73s until Ted noted the similarity between my name at work and my name in this column. One morning he straightened me out by entertaining the commuter train with a "wah-hoo-wah."

Of course, I saved the Bank of Boston news for a dry month. Our only other news comes from the College's clipping service.

In September Steve Fox was promoted to VP at Commercial National Bank in Shreveport, La., where he manages loan operations. Also in September, the Utah Bar named MikeKeller Natural Resources Lawyer of the Year. After finishing his masters in geology at Dartmouth in '75, Alike went on to Duke Law School. He practices environmental law with Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy in Salt Lake City and is vice president of the Legal Aid Society there.
