Those of you who heard Stu Finch's 50-Year Address at the 50th Reunion will hardly be surprised to learn that Stu has been named Physician of the Year by the New Jersey division of the American Cancer Society.
One benefit of being domiciled only 55 miles from Hanover is that you get to keep your doctor at DHMC. On a recent trip there (for flu shots) Betty and I were glad to see Allan and Nancy Dingwall, though Allan was less than enthusiastic to be there. Understandably. It seems that a few days earlier while entering the multi-million dollar DHMC complex for his flu shots, he tripped on a defective slab of the entranceway and fell flat on his face! What this did to his normally handsome physiognomy could hardly be called an improvement, though the damage appeared to be mainly temporary discoloration. Much more serious was his broken left wrist, carried in a sling; he was waiting to learn if and when an operation on the member would be required. It was good to see that this encounter with gravity had not impacted on Allan's normal good spirits and sense of humor, which was evident when he described DHMC's quick assurance that it would bear all expenses resulting from his fall. (Incidentally, Allan has worked as a volunteer there for the past few years.) Allan's wrist did require a three-hour operation and three days recuperating in a room with, in his words, "a lovely view of the scene of the accident." At last report he was doing fine and looking forward to a good recovery.
Andy Morgan sends a thoughtful note from the island of Hawaii expressing thanks to all '42s who worked to make our 50th "one, grand weekend." He says it was great to be with classmates he hadn't seen for many years, including Dick King who lives in Hilo, about 50 miles from Andy's Kamuela!
I feel honored to be the recipient of the "second epistolary effort" by good friend James Craighead Kuhn on his spanking new Macintosh LCII. That the attractive two-page letter was completed with only one marginal "whoopsy" is a testimonial to both the user-friendliness of the Apple system and Craig's well-deserved reputation as a quick study. Craig reports that his and Sally's 50th wedding anniversary was celebrated (a week late) October 2-3 with a presence of all children (except one), grandchildren, and great-grandson Aaron. Counting in-laws, etc., a total party of about two dozen!
We're lucky to live in a time when the rapid development of computer technology and CD-ROM permits any of us, at relatively modest cost, to have nearly instant access to vast historical, cultural, economic, and other resources with a mere fluttering of our fingers. It would be fan to hear from some of you about what role this technology plays in your lives, either professional or non-professional.
