In early September Betty and I were deeply saddened to learn from his youngest son, Thomas '88, that our good friend Craig Kuhn had died of a heart attack on August 29 at the cottage on Penobscot Bay where, over the past several decades, he and Sally had spent their August vacations with their children. We were fortunate to be among those with whom they had generously shared the beauty of that extraordinary spot on the Maine coast. We are so thankful that earlier in August we were able to spend five days with them there doing the familiar things we had done in summers past. It was for us, and in our hearts it will remain, a very special friendship. Thanks also to Bill Witman for informing me of the death of his good friend (and Tuck roommate) Jack Williams on June 22 in San Rafael, Calif. Obituaries will appear in this or future issues of the Alumni Magazine.

Bob Gale, who thoughtfully called after the death of Craig (his fellow Pittsburgh resident), says he retired from teaching at the U. of Pittsburgh in 1987. He has since published six books and is currently working on two more, including an encyclopedia devoted to Herman Melville and scheduled for publication by Greenwood Press in May of next year. He and Maureen travel a lot and have been to Spain, Bermuda, Aruba, St. Maarten, Antigua, Mexico, and London/Oxford in the past seven years.

Some of you may remember our classmate David R. Dunlap Jr. of Mobile, Ala., who, sadly, was a casualty of the war in March 1945. A couple of months before David died his wife, Jean, gave birth to twins, a son, David '66, and a daughter, Sage, now wife of Dick Chase '61. Later, Jean married Cortlandt (Bud) Heyniger '37, who didn't graduate but was smart enough to invent, construct, and market the popular Sailfish and Sunfish boats under the Alcort name. After Bud died, Jean wrote me to ask if she could "rejoin" the class of' 42, since mast of the friends she had previously made in Hanover with Dave are in our class. It seemed to me a fine idea, and I have asked the appropriate College officers to effect that transfer. I hope Jean, who lives in Woodbury, Conn., most of the year, will want to attend some of our mini-reunions in Hanover, and that we'll have a chance to welcome her back in person. Incidentally, Jean and Bud's son Cort had twin boys, so there may be further Dartmouth connections in her family.
