A Christmas letter from Mildred and Bob Powell told how they had coped with the sixth year of drought by diligent and careful watering of their fruit trees and small garden. Since tire arrival of that letter, however, the Great Basin and environs appear to have received enough precipitation to end that drought. Mildred also wrote that Al Jones had lost his wife, Anna, in November.
At their retirement center in Lenox, Mass., Harriett and Jim Lyall entertained fellow residents, my Exeter classmate (a Princeton '31) and spouse, a few days before the Princeton game. Let's hope all are still friendly and can get to the game next fall in Hanover.
In the photo on his Christmas card Charlie Hill looked remarkably fit. Season's greetings also were received from Lee Andrews, Libby and Vance Dickerman, Ruth Slaughter, Art Spiegel, Lucy Cogswell, Patsy and Bill Walsh, and Ellen and John Chamberlin, all seemingly in good spirits.
Regarding the obituary situation, Al Bucher recently ran across a photo he had taken in 1925 of a gravestone bearing the inscription, "I expected this but not so soon"; and he recalled that a friend was required to write his own obituary for a college final English exam.
Mary Hardinge wrote that Frank was on the go until the very end in October. KitBaldwin took her daughter, Betsy, on a tour of Kit's birthplace at Toms River, N.J., Kit's Rutgers University, and Dick's Dartmouth, so that Betsy can take her children on a future tour of places hallowed in the family history.
From Dave Borkum came a copy of a letter from Eleanor Oltman. She expressed her appreciation for Dave's praise, in the December Thirty-One Up, of Bob's activities on behalf of the Alumni Fund. She recalled the Oltmans' acquaintance years ago with JimPurdy and Lucy and John Camph.
Dave's message and a call from BobOelman reminded me that Alumni fund contributions are awaited.
At the spectacular Princeton game no other '31s were seen, but next-seat Jay Whitehair '32 and yours truly enjoyed a '31—'32 minireunion.
