We're sorry to report that Jack Molinas has been rubbed out by the mob. You ask, "Didn't he room with I Dan Ernst in Topliff and row in the crew?" No, "He breezed through Columbia, starred in basketball, was drafted by the NBA, was kicked out for gambling, became a lawyer, did jail time, etc." The '53 angle to this is that Neil Isaacs thought up this compulsive gambler for his latest novel, The Great Molinas. Neil has written many other books, often dealing with sports, fact or fiction. He also teaches literature and practices as a family therapist—a good source for stories, he says. After Dartmouth Neil started at Harvard Law School, but he decided that was not the right career, so he got his master's in English literature at Berkeley and his doctorate at Brown, then taught at CCNY and the University of Tennessee before joining the faculty at the University of Maryland, where he's been for many years. He says Dave Picker has read Great Molinas and is considering a movie. Incidentally, Dave was at die Hopkins Center in April for the sneak preview of his new movie "Saint of Fort Washington." Neil recently had lunch with Mitch Strickler who's now back in private law practice in Washington, D.C.
Also on the literary front, Mario D'Avanzo, professor of English at CUNY, Queens College, has recently written a scholarly book on the poetry of Robert Frost, A Cloud of OtherPoets: Robert Frost and the Romantics.
In December Bill Beutel received The Walter Carty Award Of the Public Relations Society of America for "leadership in the practice of public relations, demonstration of the highest standards of ethical conduct, service to PRSA, and service to the public." Bill has been with ABC since 1962 and since 1972 has been with Channel 7 News, the highestrated news program in New York. He has been an anchor for most of his time there. In his remarks, Bill said, "TVnews needs some public relations these days... we are virtuous citizens of the community... even though the grist of our mill is murder, mahem, and rape."
Dick O'Connor is now firmly repotted as a CFA doing retirement planning and money management at Infinet in Durham, N.C. He sees JohnMitchell, who is retiring from Elon College this year. Dick, Jim Cartmell, and Tom Bloomer will be at their annual golf outing in Hilton Head just before the Heritage Classic. Ward Hamm isn't coming this year. He's an independent agent for National Life of Vermont and other insurers in Carmel, Indiana, near Indianapolis. His golf is good and getting better, says Dick.
Another successful reunion of our Aspen Group—Spiegel, Edgar, Buchanan, Florence, Gabby, and I, and this time we also had Phil Fast, who drove over from Boise with his son. Mountains of snow, a few spills, but nothing broken. Incidentally, the Trustees have authorized purchase a used chairlift for the Skiway to keep it in full operation.
Our congratulations. Jean (Mrs. Chuck)Kettering married Les Pericord, a longtime friend, also of Denver.
See you at the great reunion, June 14-17. Make your reservations, send in your check, and, oh, yes, send Don Goss or Pag your nominations for a new slate of class officers.
