In the TV show "Northern Exposure," Joel Fleischman's Public Health Service medical school scholarship has landed him in the remote town of Cicely, Alaska. In real life, Roland Feltner's Public Health Service scholarship to the University of Cincinnati medical school earned him a post at the Okanogan (Wash.) Farmworkers Clinic, in the apple-growing region of Eastern Washington (about an hour and a half from the town where "Northern Exposure" is filmed).
Roland's Public Health term actually ended two years ago, but he's staying. "I like the freedom to practice a broad range of medicine," he says, "and being in a place where I'm making a difference." There's one stoplight in the entire county and one theater in the nearby town of Omak (population: 2,000), where Roland and his family actually live. His wife, Mary Walter-Feltner '77, is an attorney, and they have three kids: Nathaniel 8, John 5, and Alanna 2. "It's a slower pace," says Roland. "And we get to spend more time with the kids. We also like the opportunities for outdoor activities—skiing, hiking, biking, horseback riding. We have a very nice life out here."
Jeff Susman's Public Health scholarship to Dartmouth Medical School placed him at the Wahoo Clinic in Wahoo, Neb. After his fouryear hitch, Jeff joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where his wife, Katharine Cummings Susman '79, is a programmer and analyst. They now live in Elkhorn with their kids Katie 7, Daniel
5, and Benjamin 2. Jeff "Ernie" Verzella's army scholarship to the Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse sent him to Hawaii for three years, Fort Bragg for four years, and Honduras for six months. Jeff, Alma, and their kids Nick 13, Jade 8, and Liana 2 now live in Williamsport, Penn., the home of the Little League World Series. (So far Nick and Jade are playing only soccer.)
Beth Brady's navy term sent her to Newport, R.I. (one year), Japan (two years), and then to Camp Lejeune, N.C., in support of Operation Desert Storm. She is now living in Simsbury, Conn., in private practice working at Hartford Hospital. If my computer printout is correct, Athena Moundalexis is the farthest-flung physician at the moment, serving with the Peace Corps in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Helen Andrews Noble and husband Kenneth have opted for the small-town life of Chestertown, on Maryland's Upper Eastern Shore. Helen is a general internist in private practice and on the staff of Kent & Queen Anne's City Hospital. Ken coaches lacrosse, takes care of their three-year-old son, Bill, and fights for the integrity of downtown Chestertown against interlopers like Wal-Mart. As reported a month ago, Rob Portman is running for the Congressional seat from Cincinnati. He did win the primary on March 16 and will now stand as the Republican candidate in the general election on May 4.
