1943 is the year that the Allies battered their way into Italy and continued to bomb Germany. FDR had meetings with Churchill, Stalin, and Chiang Kai-shek, traveling to Casablanca, Cairo, and Tehran. At home, Chicago put its first subway system into operation. People were singing "Mairzy Doats" and "I'll Be Seeing You." The federal government began a neat idea called income tax withholding. 1943 is also famous for the birth of hundreds of men who would someday attend Dartmouth as members of the class of '65. If this is your month, happy birthday from your classmates. If you get this soon enough, make the trip to Washington D.C. and join the class 50th birthday party May 14—16 at the Mayflower Hotel.
John Daily was presented with an early birthday present in February. Systems Center in Reston, Va., announced that John had been elected president and chief executive officer, and they acknowledged that he had "been responsible for significant change and progress throughout the company in the previous year." He joined Systems Center only 13 months earlier as senior vice president, corporate marketing. Prior to that, John had a successful 22-year career with IBM, where he held a number of significant positions including director of worldwide advertising and promotion. John earned his M.B.A. from Columbia.
This column is called Class Notes, and I hope that you look forward to seeing something about your classmates in each issue. Since I began my duties in May of 1991,1 have found a way to mention 260 members of the class of '65. I love to have real news, such as what you just read about John Daily. Sometimes I have to resort to rumors or beg people to write to us. For example, I wonder what Cantey Davis is doing these days. How are things in Honduras, Lee Arbuckle? I telephoned JoelEiserman last week looking for an update, but he was out and I had to talk to his answering machine. Joel? I am hoping to set up a nationwide system of agents who would be willing to gather information and send it to me so I can pass it on to all of you. There are still over 400 members of the class who remain in hiding. Write to me at the address below or give me a phone call at home, (617) 272-2017, to let us know if you would like to be part of the communications chain.
In the meantime, more questions. What is happening in your life, Jack McLean, StuRussell, Bruce Wagner, Dave Beattie, and Brad Gerrish? Is anyone ready to announce a wedding or a grandchild? Who is ready to retire or make a change in careers? Use the phone or a pen, please. Thanks. Until I hear from you, take care of those who are important in your life.
