The State University of New York, College of Fredonia selected our own Dr. Richard Gilman as its commencement speaker this year. He's also received lots of honors, including the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor and fellowship in the Geological Society of America. Having just taken a wonderful, inspirational trip down through the Grand Canyon with my cousin Fred Cropp, a geologist from Worcester College, I am now steeped in geology. I find it fascinating to think of Dick Gilman starting his geological teaching career 30-plus years ago, when the theory of plate tectonics was just being formulated. Dick spends his summer working for the Maine Geological Survey. Before you visit Acadia National Park, pick up a copy of his book, Guide to The Geology of Acadia National Park.
Mike Tompkins has been elected an offi the cer of Paul Revere Insurance Group. Mike is reinsurance vice president for the firm, which, of course, is secondary to his duty as a member of our class executive committee. Mike got training for that tough assignment during his stint in the Marine Corps, after which he went directly to Paul Revere. He's been helping that firm grow ever since.
Martin Anderson has a good PR department, and we have heard from several sources that he is now a columnist for the ScrippsHoward News Service. Let's try to give Marty some feedback. Let me know when you read a particular article that either tickles you or angers you. I personally am fascinated by an article which let us know that, though it is certainly not publicized by the Clinton administration, at our current projected economicgrowth rate, federal tax revenues will grow by $264 billion dollars during the first Clinton administration without any change in taxes. Imagine what the increase will be with the new tax law in place. Martin's statement is that Washington is "awash" in money from you and me, the taxpayers.
I had a nice note from Dave Oberlander '55 reminiscing about Mad River Glen and old times skiing. For those of us who enjoyed the weekend with Monk and Marsha Bancroft, maybe we should invite Dave as an honorary '57 to our next class mini-reunion at Mad River,
Sadly, I have received several death notices recently. I would very much appreciate any friend volunteering to write a 200-word obituary for inclusion in a future Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Please give me a call or drop me a note. The class certainly extends its sympathy and concern to the family and friends of each of these classmates who are no longer with us. Bruce Lawrence Paule died in March. He lived in Minneapolis, Minn., and is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their children. David Greig Rattray of Amangasett, N.Y., died of a brain tumor in March. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and one child. George Roumanis died at the end of 1991. He lived in Long Island City, N.Y. CharlesGriffing Winters of Dover, N.H., also died at the end of 1991, leaving his wife, Ann.
I hope to have more information on these classmates as part of next month's column.
