The Granite of New Hampshire suits John well. A son of this state, and a son of a gun in every aspect of his life and career in it, he has made a deep and lasting imprint on the place.
His father was Kenneth Graf '28, whose law firm John joined to specialize in corporate and business law. His talents and expertise in the legal field are legion, but his long reach has touched scores of other institutions, people, and causes: local government, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, industrial corporations, schools, the YMCA, the New Hampshire Symphony, cable TV, banks, the Small Business Association, and the New Hampshire Tennis Association. To keep his head clear, he plays tennis, skis, or flyfishes . . . passing on the way out the door his President's Award for Distinguished Service from the New Hampshire Bar Association.
At Dartmouth he was captain of the swimming team and a member of a fraternity and a senior honor society. As an alumnus he has been active in enrollment work, reunion giving, and job development. He has been a member of his class executive committee and a class agent, and he has been both a class and a club president. All of which adds up to a whole lot of Green.
But green is only one of the many tints that have colored John's life. The glow of his family, wife Ann their three children, has come first. Then, those core values of fairness, integrity, trust caring, freedom, and beauty—along with incredible shows of personal strength and courage-—have been his fence posts and bench marks.
We'd like to make our mark, too, by presenting him with this Alumni Award, given with Dartmouth's undying gratitude, affection, and admiration.
