Elliot Stultz has a knack for choosing apartments in New York. He used to live on the Upper West Side in the same building as Liz Augustin, SallyMoyer, and Peter Barbur (who, by the way, just made partner at Cravath, Swaine and Moore). And when he bought an apartment on the Upper East Side he found himself sharing an elevator with Lisa Cholnoky. But Elliot's is an outdoor karma too. He recently ran into Lynn Vanderhoek on the street and reports that she is working for Syracuse University at the Newhouse Broadcast and Journalism School. "She looks great," says Elliot, "is doing really well, and gets to go out to lunch with people like Bob Costas and the Newhouses." As for Elliot himself, after years working as an attorney for big firms, he's switched to the non-profit sector and is doing real-estate law for Teacher's (TIAA/CREF) pension fund.
On the subject of New York apartments, I hear that Dina Baker Smallman, a buyer for Bloomingdale's mail-order catalogue, and her husband, Peter, who owns a video-production company, recently bought an apartment in one of the great, old art deco buildings on the West Side. Apparently the owner, a devotee of that period, wanted to sell his furnishings too, so Dina now lives in deco heaven.
When she's not out jogging, that is. Dina was sighted not too long ago in a race in Central Park, along with Pam Chappell, who has been doing more running than ever. Pam lives in New Jersey with her daughter, Hayley (sorry if I've spelled that wrong, Pam), to whom she is absolutely devoted.
If you happened to have popped by the international Dante conference that took place at Princeton this month you already know it was organized by Lauren Scancarelli Seem. Lauren got her M.A. at Princeton and is now a lecturer in classics there. She lives in Princeton as well, with husband Boot 'B4 who works for News Corp., and daughters Mary 6 and Nancy 2. If you want to see what their house looks like, check out Meg Ryan's new movie, IQ, when it comes out. It's about Albert Einstein, and no, Miss Ryan doesn't play the scientist (although she did play an old man in Prelude to a Kiss). She's Einstein's niece, and costar Tim Robbins is the mechanic she falls in love with. It was filmed in Princeton, and Einstein's house in the movie is the one right across the street from Lauren's. And you thought you weren't going to get anymore Hollywood gossip.
Dave Kupferschmid was recently sighted in Paris, supposedly having just returned from the state of Georgia (of the former U.S.S.R., not the U.S.), where he'd been helping rewrite their constitution. Not to mention dodging bullets. (True? False? Somewhere in between?)
On the national political front, Tim Geithner was recently appointed deputy assistant secretary for international monetary and financial policy. I think that means he hobnobs with Lloyd Bentsen. Tim, who joined the Treasury Department in 1988, previously was a special assistant to Under Secretary Lawrence Summers, and before that an attache in Tokyo. He is married, has a daughter, and lives in Bethesda, Md.
And last but not least, William GordonPrescott recently joined the law firm of Katz, Lapointe and Murphy in the Berkshires, where he'll be specializing in residential and commercial real estate, civil litigation, and condominium law. In some respects it was a negligible move. He previously had his own law office right next door. Gordon and his wife, Mary, a documentation manager in the software industry, have a two-year-old son named William and live in Lenox, Mass.
