Jeff Davis has sent us a profile of Nat Leonard from the Valley News describing in fascinating detail Nat's entry into Paris on D-Day as a member of ALSOS, a counter-intelligence group seeking information about the Nazis' development of the atomic bomb. His scientific interest did not prevent Nat from enjoying the euphoria of being one of the first Americans to enter La Ville Lumiere on August 24,1944. He graphically recounted the enthusiasm of the crowds, the De Gaulle parade, the bursts of machinegun fire, and the jubilant women who even "swarmed into the tanks" to greet the liberators. Nat was described by the lady correspondent as having then been "a big, fairhaired, confident-looking man with a resemblance to the actor Spencer Tracy," and the accompanying 50-year-old photo of Nat in uniform and a more recent delightful one proved that the reporter's description still holds true.
Bill and Eleanor Bates are "doing 0.K." in West Hartford, where Bill retired as treasurer of Connecticut General Insurance Company in 1976. They keep an eye on the state political scene, but Bill says that their most enjoyable activity is their annual vacation at their daughter's place in Friendship, Maine, where they enjoy various recreations with her, her Keene doctor husband, and their two children. They enjoy the salubrious Down East atmosphere and they sated themselves on lobster and crab meat. Our tactile corpuscles are salivating at the very thought of those dinners.
Jack Huntress characterized his present activity as "hanging in there" when we chatted with him recently, but discussion proved that his description was too modest. He and his family moved to Scottsdale in 1957, where he started the Sugar Bowl ice cream parlor which has thrived mightily and is now managed by his nephew. In 1962 he was one of the founders of the town of Paradise Valley to protect the area from unplanned com mercial development, and he served as mayor of the new town from 1962 to 1972. During his service, he sponsored regulations which required electric and other utility wiring to be placed underground. His activities are less demanding now, but he does play golf and plans to resume his hacking when the weather cools down enough to permit play.
