Let's wind up our class questionnaire report here and now! By a margin of 48 percent "yes" to 19 percent "no," with 33 percent unsure, we believe our grandchildren are better prepared for life than we were. However, 62 percent contend that life is tougher for them, with 15 percent disagreeing and 23 percent undecided.
What are we reading? Truman by McCullough is a clear winner. The Client and Grisham's other novels are popular, as are StopTime and Blood, Tears, and Folly by Conroy. Bob Barnum's recommendation, BalkanGhosts by Kaplan, presents an excellent perspective upon Yugoslavia, probably the most complex region in today's,world, with its diverse ethnic and religious elements unable to get along with one another for centuries.
Where do we like to travel? Europe and England topped a long list followed by the Caribbean. We do travel a lot!
Recreation and hobbies? In order of popularity: golf, reading, tennis, boating/sailing, hiking/walking, gardening, computering, skiing, and fishing. Most of us perform a variety of volunteer work. Most detested activity? Completing Medicare paperwork!
Favorite TV programs? Sports by far, with MacNeil-Lehrer, Masterpiece Theatre, and news in close pursuit, followed by 60 Minutes, NYPDBlue, and Mystery Theater.
Happy marriages, great families, and satisfying careers dominated the "personal accomplishments" responses.
Since our fall mini-reunion fell after the copy deadline for this issue, we'll leave the reporting to Howie Leavitt and his newsletter.
Charlie Donovan delivered an address honoring Chub Feeney on July 29 at a Cooperstown Hall of Fame Memorial Service. Chub's daughter Katy, now a National League VP, George Munroe, and Bob Clark attended along with numerous baseball dignitaries.
By the time you read this, Oregon may have its second Dartmouth governor in 15 years, Dr. John Kitzhaber '69, an emergency-room physician who became state senate president and author of the Oregon Health Plan. Our own Bob Straub served as governor in the late seventies. [Kitzhaber was indeed elected. —ed.]
This is your secretary's final column. Since taking over from Binney Tower three years ago, it has been a privilege to communicate with you and hopefally to have played a small role in holding our gang together. Your accomplishments are remarkable, your loyalty out- standing and typical of the mysterious bond that characterizes the Dartmouth family.
Paul Randall of Kingston, Mass., has graciously consented to serve as class secretary. His first column will appear in February. Paul spent most of his working career with United Shoe Machinery Corporation in managerial and executive positions in marketing. He was later with the New England Governors Conference and in real-estate brokerage north of Boston. He and Betsy have two daughters and one son. Paul's residence in New England should enable closer contact with class-
mates than my remote location in Oregon has permitted. Best of luck, Paul, and to the rest of you, may the years favor you with good health and happiness!
