These are a few headlines from the Daily D 50 years ago this spring. We all remember Stubby Pearson, an outstanding leader of the class of 1942 who captained many Big Green teams of our era. He was later to lose his life in the war, a tragic loss considering the contribution a man of his talents would likely have made during our lifetime. Johnny "Koz" earned his captainship by batting over 300, placing second in the league for the 1941 season, and doing a great job behind the plate.
And so, on to the present! News of the Cape Cod Dartmouth club comes from two sources. Hal Ripley, former '29 class secretary, sent a thoughtful note commending our PresBrooks for a marvelous job in a second term as club prexy. Farmer and Jan Mead ventured off island from their home on Martha's Vineyard to attend a luncheon of the club at Mildred's Chowder House at Hyannis, where they were welcomed by Pres, Chan Stevens, and Bing Donaldson. About 40 alumni and wives were present. Farmer reports no damage from Hurricane Bob or a Halloween Nor'easter, and he modestly acknowledges acceptance into the local Chainsaw Symphony, apparently some sort of elite firewood cutting brotherhood.
Jim Adams's valiant efforts to assemble Florida '43s for a mini honoring BinneyTower failed to produce desired attendance. Undaunted, he will try again next year, probably in Sanibel. Write to him at 3699 Brandy Rock Way, Redwood City, CA 94061.
Keeping up with Bill Seidman isn't easy! Having finished his stint helping rescue the troubled savings and loan industry, he has returned to BDO Seidman in a consulting role advising clients on financial matters involving the economy, financial services, new financial statement standards, and legal protection from potential liabilities. Bill also received the Daniel Webster Award for distinguished public service from the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C. He succeeds prior recipients C. Everett Koop '37 and Postmaster General Anthony Frank '53.
Also honored recently was GeorgeMunroe, given the prestigious Alumni Award of Dartmouth College, which recognizes alumni for career achievement and community service.
When in Portland, Ore., in March I had a pleasant chat with Dave MacLane, who retired to Oregon following a career in private school teaching, coaching, and administration, largely in Connecticut and Long Island, where he served as headmaster at several institutions. Dave's wife, Marcia, is quite seriously ill, which has limited their travel and makes coming back for our 50th somewhat "iffy" at present. We all hope that situation will change for the best.
Barbara and I attended an Elder Hostel in Las Cruces, N.M., providing an opportunity to touch base with Bill Hunt. After practicing medicine in Minnesota and Pennsylvania, Bill and Maggie migrated to Las Cruces, where Bill practiced for seven years, liking it well enough to retire there. They have a daughter in Burlington, Vt., but this is as close as they have come to Hanover in recent years.
Don't forget! Bob Gray, Box 505, New London, NH 03257 needs your writeups for our 50th yearbook.
