One thing we should celebrate together in June is our treasured gift to the incoming freshman class. As you know, we provided each member a copy of The Dartmouth Story by Robert Graham '40. That gift will enrich students with knowledge of Dartmouth's background.
Our head agent, Bob Engelman, got a well-deserved citation for outstanding service, with 1934 being the oldest class to achieve a year-out record in the 1993 Alumni Fund. The year also provided Bob and Mary a special reward—their first great-grandchild, Hillary Engelman.
Ralph and Jackie Brabbee slipped in and out of their 50th anniversary last February on a three-day cruise out of Miami—lots of good fun and beautiful scenes. Next trip was to Virginia for their California son's wedding.
Jim and Lucile Ballard sent me a fine picture of their family gathering, along with a brochure for their retirement community, Highland Farms in Black Mountain, N.C. Such a beautiful area for the senior years, with mountains, colleges, and cultural attractions nearby.
After receiving the unhappy word of Dottie Krogslund's passing, many '34s must have reviewed their memory books. The NelsonKrogslunds' Port Jervis home so often had the '34 welcome-mat out.
Were you surprised to see in the new 1934 Directory that Massachusetts now tops Florida 42 to 31 ? New York is still third with 27, New Hampshire fourth with 20, and Connecticut and California tied at 18. That Geographical Listing section was based on preferred residence in August. If the printer had made selections in winter, Florida would top Massachusetts 45 to 39.
Among those who shift to Florida for six months are Ben and Barbara Piatt. After they celebrated their 50th, Ben's winter project last year when he wasn't playing tennis or sailing was to design extensions and additions to their Michigan house. He made it better adapted to their expected senior requirements.
Surprises come forward at dinner here at Kendal. A big one for me was dining with a fellow named Christopher Huntington and learning he was first cousin to Eleazar Wheelock five times removed. His great-grandfather eight generations back was Wheelock's three generations back. He showed me the family chart.
