My Dartmouth mail lately seems to fall into the categories of awards and achievements, new positions, and death notices. How about some more of the former and no more of the latter. Recent news of the loss of Richard Riggs, DanSullivan, John Pendleton, and now JohnBurns saddens many of us who knew them and reminds all of us of how precious time is. Writing obituaries is my least favorite task, so I hope it is a long time before I face it again.

The happy news this month includes the appointment of Bob Bell as the Class of 1924 Professor of English at Williams College. Bob has been at Williams since 1972 and continues to specialize in the work of Joyce, the subject of his most recent book (partly the result of a recent fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities). Bob has published in so many journals that it would take the entire column to list them all. Those of us who spent many evenings in Sanborn Library with Bob aren't at all surprised at his success.

In the category of "inspiration to all of us of a certain age" has to be CharlieHoeveler. In 1963 Charlie won the New England Junior Tennis Championship at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. In 1993 Charlie won the National Father-Son Grass Court Championship on the very same court with his 17-year-old son, Charles. What a wonderful victory for Charlie, who heads up the U.S. Sports Development Summer Camps.

Making the 1993 Institutional Investor All American Research Team is Richard Chu, who is making a real name for himself as managing director at Cowan Inc. This is the second year I have seen Richard receive this award.

On the job-change front is our indefatigable mini-reunion chair, Bill Yaggy, who has moved from Planned Parenthood to the International Rescue Committee. Bill is now raising funds in New York for a variety of refugee aid projects. In his spare time he is organizing our April 30 evening at Jerry Zaks's production of Laughter on the 23rd Floor. If you have any questions, call Bill at home at (212) 601-3018.

Send me your news.
