This month marks the first column of a new class scribe. Upon reading the class of 1923 column in December of last year, I noted that the class no longer had a secretary. Since I was a recipient of the Class of 1923 Scholarship during my time at the College, I volunteered my services for the Class Notes and was fortunately accepted by the class representative.

I recently spoke with Charles H.Jones Jr. '52 who reports that his father, Charles H."Pete" Jones Sr. has had a difficult winter, but still maintains his residence in West Falmouth, Mass. Pete is quite limited in his activities but continues to be as active as he can. The Jones family counts four generations of Dartmouth graduates. Pete's father received his degree 20 years after his actual class graduation, as he and the dean had considerable discussion concerning the merits of studying versus raccoon hunting. Apparently, Mr. Jones chose raccoon hunting, and this resulted in the passage of some time prior to the awarding of his degree.

Ms. Martha Bird Scrase writes that her uncle, Major Bird, resides parttime at the Glacier Hills Nursing Center in Ann Arbor and part time at his home in Adrian, Mich., and continues to vote there by absentee ballot. Major continued to practice law until several years ago and currently is sustained by his longtime interest in train travel, model railroads, architecture, and interior decorating. He was unable to make the trip to the last class reunion but very much did want to attend. We wish Major a happy birthday, as he will be 93 on April 22.

Until next column, '23 Skiddoo.
