T.J. and Ellen Crane miraculously escaped the ravages of the fall fires in California. At one point, an offshoot of the Laguna blaze turned toward their community, forcing them to evacuate. Fortunately, a backfire and favorable winds spared them, although charred remains were less than 100 feet from the houses.

T.J. is still practicing corporate law with an Orange County-based firm. In a complete repudiation of Long Island's stereotypical lifestyle, Tom has taken up scouting with his three sons and, even more incredibly, mountain climbing. Ellen reports that, after reading an article in the L.A. Times, Tom was rendered temporarily insane and decided to climb Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental U.S. In late September, he and his cronies climbed the 22 miles to the summit in 16 hours.

Regina Barreca's career continues to flourish. Last fall her book Perfect Husbands (andOther Fairy Tales), an overview of the politics of marriage, was published. The book essentially tries to realign reasonable marital expectations. Distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy relationships, it explores problems and issues of relationships i.e. when to stay and when to sever. Reviews indicate that the book is accessible and men-friendly.
