One of the fringe benefits of this job is that occasionally I get more than just news from classmates. Recently, two such postings arrived within a week of each other. The first was from Jon Shastid. Jon has been in the beverage industry since graduation but has recendy moved from the large-corporate alcohol side of the business to a small fresh-juice company (talk about culture shock). Jon sent along some of his products, and, since they disappeared before I got much of a chance to sample them, I can only say that my kids liked them. The company's name is Odwalla (there is a long story of how the name came to be, but I'll skip that), and it is pretty much a West Coast venture for the near future. Jon says the business is looking to expand eastward but doesn't want to get too big too fast and lose all the benefits of being a small company. Jon is back in California after many years in Kentucky but will spend some time in East Hampton, Long Island, where his wife and children are summering. Jon was my roommate sophomore year, so I know him well-enough to make an observation about him and about myself: we are maturing. My parents warned me this would happen some day. I just didn't know it would happen this soon. Fight it, Jon!

Well, it's off I go to the pool where I am reading Native Angels while sipping Odwalla "Mango Tango" and wondering why John Spooner has not sent me some of his Frito-Lay products. I hope to see you October 21 at the Homecoming tailgate party across from Topliff. Look for the class banner.

Take care and write.
