The summer produced record temperatures in many parts of the nation, but I'm hoping you're all enjoying beautiful, and cooler, autumn weather at this reading. I had a nice telephone talk with Doug Wheale in Greenville, N.C., in July. He enjoys the outings of the D. Club of the Western Carolinas, where he once met Michael Orr '65, son of our great athlete Jack Orr, who was lost in the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in the Pacific. Doug stays active taking his Boston Whaler to local lakes for fishing and also pulling his boat trailer to Florida behind his RV for several winter months.

Doug reported that he had seen Bill Galbraith from Hendersonville, N.C., at several D. Club functions.

I also had a good talk on the phone with Hall Buzzell who has a farm (pronounced 'faam') 100 miles north of Hanover. Buzz modestly allowed that his only exercise as a retired farmer was picking peas.

He was expecting a visit from my Florida neighbors Hank and Esther Fisk, so maybe they generated some additional action. Buzz has five children in the area plus one in Alberta, Canada, and he's justly proud of a granddaughter who is a sophomore at Dartmouth with a GPA close to 4.0.

Last year I wrote an obituary for Pat Conway who had died in California a year earlier. The College had only limited info on Pat, but his son Thomas has now written to me about his father's continued love of and participation in swimming and alpine skiing up until his death on July 23, 1993. A Chicago native, Pat received a master's degree from Northwestern in 1954. Later, in 1958, he and his family moved to California where he worked as a stockbroker until his death. Pat is survived by two daughters and two attorney sons.

I'm under orders from Don Hanks and Vic Schneider to mention the 55th Reunion on June 10-12, 1996, so I was happy to find in my mail survey that 28 percent of the 33 respondents said they would attend "for sure" and 41 percent said "maybe." That looks like a good turnout.

The survey also revealed that 14 percent of our class members were "proud" of Dartmouth sports teams, 72 percent felt the teams were "adequate," and 14 percent said "disappointing."

As TV viewers, the same respondents favored football (54 percent) to golf (19 percent).

On the student admission program, 26 percent thought it was "fair" and 63 percent believed it was "tilted for minorities."

The diversity effort by the College was scored as follows: "overdone" 68 percent, "correct" 32 percent, and "needs emphasis" 0 percent.

As a co-ed institution, 45 percent of the class members "liked it," 48 percent "tolerated," and 7 percent "disliked it."

So how do those responses agree with the feelings of the rest of the class members? I'd be glad to get some reaction, either pro or con. And while you're at it, let me know what keeps you busy or "makes your day."

Cheers and stay well.
