A welcome note from Bob Kirk, a faithful correspondent. (Doubly welcome since at the moment I have no news from other classmates.) Bob says, "On July 25 I attended the annual meeting of the Friends of Hopkins Center when Ginia Allison (outgoing president) presented a check for $25,000 to the director of the Hop. This is a down payment for a concert grand that costs $65,000 to $70,000. Other '42s in attendance included Wally Farr, Huntly Allison, Dave Sargent, and Bob Encherman."
All of this reminds me that near the end of our May 5 meeting of the executive committee, and in the context of a discussion of the class of '42 doing something for the College as a continuing class project, Bob Kirk moved that the class make a 1995 donation of $500 to the Athletic Sponsors Program (ASP). The motion was approved unanimously.
Guy Swenson and others suggested that the class remain flexible to supporting areas of the College program other than athletics in future years. At this point Jack Corwith asked the class secretary to include mention of the $500 contribution to the ASP in his '42 Class Notes, while at the same time requesting suggestions from classmates regarding other areas of the College they would like our class to support with class funds in future years. [The sound you hear is me, so requesting.]
At our May meeting one suggested recipient for further giving was, indeed, the Friends of the Hopkins Center, and it was noted that this class project could at the same time involve the honoring of Allan Dingwall. Allan died last March 23. He had a long-standing association with the Hopkins Center as an associate to the director, was a founder of the "Friends," and was the orchestrator of such blockbuster fun draising events as getting his friend Jack Benny to play the violin with the Dartmouth Symphony. If you would like to vote in favor of such a '42 class project, take a moment to drop me a postcard. And, of course, if you wish to suggest some other area of the College program for the class to support, please let me know.
